Best ways to get around in Bangkok

Transportation is important nowadays. Especially when you are in a city you don’t really know. There are some good and special ways to get around in Bangkok and I cover the most convenient ways you should get around in Bangkok.

Traffic

Taxi: In my experience, the best way to get around in Bangkok. They are fast, convenient and have air-conditioning (something I need). But don’t use a taxi around 7am- 9am or 5pm- 8pm. During the rush hour you will be stuck in traffic for a long time. I prefer using the ‘Grab’ or ‘Bolt’- app. Both can be downloaded in all Appstore and assure you, that you won’t get scammed. The price you will pay is shown before you book a cab. Instead of the regular taxi, you can also book a SUV. You pay more, but it is a better way when you are with a bigger group. Last but not least, you can book a scooter. I never used one of these, because they drive like maniacs and don’t have helmets you can use. And going 80 on the highway without protection is not something I plan to do.

Tuk Tuk: The traditional and most touristic way to get around. But I recommend using any other sort of transportation over the Tuk Tuk. These drivers will potentially scam you, they are dangerous, they are loud and uncomfortable. But you want to have a ‘Bangkok experience’? Take one, BUT ONLY ONE. There are much better and more comfortable ways to get around.

Non-traffic

BTS: One of the alternatives to avoid traffic. The BTS (sky train), MRT (subway) and the Airport Rail Link. The BTS is the most popular one, it covers the center of Bangkok. The two lines connect at ‘Siam’. The lines cover all the touristic places like Sukhumvit, Silom and Thon Buri. The BTS also connects to the MRT, Airport Rail Link and the Chao Phraya Express Boat.

The MRT is the subway of Bangkok. There are two lines that connect outer Bangkok with central Bangkok. These lines run, during rush hour, every 3 minutes. If you want to travel during rush hour, this is the best alternative, right? Though, it isn’t connected to many tourist locations and is primarily used by locals. The touristic locations that it does cover are Chatuchak weekend market, Lumphini Park and the Train Station.

The Airport Rail Link runs from Suvarnabhumi Airport (try to say that 5 times in a row) to the center of Bangkok. It is the best way to get into the city from the airport. It is cheap, fast and eco-friendly. This link is connected to the BTS and MRT.

If you want to check out some sights along the river, then the Chao Phraya express boat is a good option. It will show you the Thai life along the river. There are several boats. The local boat is 15 bath. But there is also a tourist boat, which is more luxurious for 50 bath.
