The King of Thailand

King Bhumibol

The Thai monarchy has been in a quandary for years. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, born in 1927 and the longest-serving head of state in the world, is sadly no longer among us. And with his death, the throne has passed to Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, who is not only much younger than his predecessor, but also does not have many people behind him. It’s going to be an interesting new years for Thailand!

Formal titles confirmed

Air Force officers are impressed that their chief, Minister or Monarch Prayuth Chan-ocha, at the royal court is conferring rank on Vajiralongkorn. The title of “chairman” is granted to him.

A spokesman for the Defense Ministry confirmed that this title was granted to the young Prince in exchange for his support in the recovery from the 2014 coup. This news led to much publicity.

Vajiralongkorn was already an air force officer and also defense minister during the politico-monarchical regime of hisohetchade Somsri (2006-2014) and is thus not new on the political scene. The departure from his chain of office led to a government crisis but he always maintains contact with all major institutions in Thailand.

Big shoes to fill

Thailand’s new king, Vajiralongkorn, has big shoes to fill. He is the youngest son of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit, and was crowned on Dec. 1 after his father’s death. Already known for his controversial remarks, he is expected to take a more conservative approach to politics than his father.

Vajiralongkorn also faces a power struggle within the royal family. His older brother, Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is currently the crown prince and is likely to become the next king. However, Vajiralongkorn has been given a number of important portfolios, including defense, intelligence and national security. This could lead to tensions between him and Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Tribute to a sober king on World Soil Day

Vajiralongkorn is a level-headed king who rules one of the most populous and vibrant countries in Southeast Asia. As reigning monarch, Vajiralongkorn is responsible for the general welfare of his subjects and ensures their needs are met. On World Soil Day, Oct. 12, it is important to remember that soil is vital to the survival of both people and plants. Without soil, there would be no food, no trees and no animals. King Vajiralongkorn is an excellent example of how a monarch can put his people first and uphold the importance of soil cultivation.
